The Welcome Table: James Baldwin’s Dream

The organization John Brown Lives! will be hosting a dinner at 5 p.m. on August 2, 2025, with AWTT artist Robert Shetterly, in conversation with musician and AWTT portrait subject Reggie Harris and attorney Eleanor Stein.
“Join us at The Welcome Table, a dinner inspired by James Baldwin’s vision of a place where ‘all would be respected, loved, seen, known, and fed.’ We gather in community to honor his legacy through conversation, food, and celebration. . . . Dishes pay homage to James Baldwin and Nikki Giovanni and will be prepared by Chef Lewis Hughes, a descendant of Harper’s Ferry raiders Lewis Sheridan Leary and John Anthony Copeland, Jr.”

This Welcome Table dinner is inspired by a collection of AWTT portrait reprints that will be on display at the John Brown Homestead in Lake Placid, NY through October 2025.
John Brown Lives! is the official NYS Friends Group of the John Brown Farm State Historic Site, dedicated to the preservation, interpretation and promotion of this site of conscience and human rights destination. In May of 2021, John Brown Lives! was welcomed as a Network to Freedom partner through the National Park Service.
