The American Who Tells the Truth (AWTT) portrait exhibit at the Bates Mill in Lewiston, Maine, stands as a powerful reminder of integrity, courage, and the importance of truth in democracy. This remarkable collection, showcasing the work of artist Robert Shetterly, invites visitors to engage with the stories of individuals who have made significant sacrifices to speak truth to power.
Each portrait is accompanied by a quote that captures the essence of the subject’s personal story and their commitment to truth. This collection includes renowned leaders such as Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, as well as modern-day activists.
Shetterly’s work is not just an artistic endeavor; it’s a call to action. He emphasizes that these individuals remind us that speaking the truth can be a moral obligation, a personal sacrifice, and a beacon of hope. The exhibit encourages viewers to reflect on their own roles in the pursuit of truth and justice in today’s society.
The Bates Mill, an iconic structure in Lewiston, serves as an inspiring backdrop for this exhibit. Once a hub of textile manufacturing, the mill has been repurposed into a cultural space that fosters creativity and community engagement. The juxtaposition of Shetterly’s portraits against the industrial aesthetic of the mill creates a unique atmosphere, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in both the art and the history of the space.
The exhibit is designed to be interactive and thought-provoking. Throughout its duration, various workshops, discussions, and events are scheduled, encouraging the local community to engage deeply with the themes presented in the portraits. From guided tours, to panel discussions featuring portraits subjects and local activists to education and art workshops for students and teachers.
This exhibit encourages visitors to reflect on their own understanding of truth and the role they can play in promoting truth within their communities.
Docent-facilitated tours are offered by special arrangement. To schedule a docent-led tour, contact AWTT Education Director Connie Carter: [email protected].
