Americans Who Tell the Truth
It was in October 1954 that President Eisenhower declared November 11th as a national holiday to honor U.S. Veterans: “On that day let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, and let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting and enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain.” Read the full Proclamation here
It was also President Eisenhower who said: “In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex.”
The President was asking Americans to recognize the worthiness of both sentiments. As a decorated U.S. Veteran, Eisenhower understood their mutual validity.
