AWTT Unveilings in Greensborough
The Beloved Community Center of Greensborough, North Carolina, hosts its fourth annual Truth, Justice and Reconcilliation Summit on February 8-10, 2026 at Bennett College’s Global Learning Center.
AWTT artist Robert Shetterly is honored to be unveiling two portraits on the opening day of the conference, the portraits of Lewis Pitts and Joyce and Nelson Johnson. The Johnsons are known as leading co-founders of the Beloved Community Center and of the Truth and Reconcilliation process created in the wake of the November 3, 1979 Greensborough Massacre. Lewis Pitts is a retired attorney who dedicated a significant portion of his legal career advocating for racial-justice movements.
The NC-TJRC Summit strives to “foster a culture of unity, mutually supportive work, and accountability among ourselves, even as we strengthen people’s accountability structures to hold our elected officials accountable to all the people, not just a select few.”
“NC-TJRC (North Carolina Truth, Justice and Reconcilliation Commission) is a people-driven effort focusing on grassroots change.”
The Beloved Community Center is actively connecting with diverse residents, organizations, and institutions across the state, covering locations like Asheville, Charlotte, Greensboro, and more. A 45-member advisory council, mainly from North Carolina, supports this initiative for positive change.
