Artist Robert Shetterly offers AWTT Webinar
The Florida Chapter of World BEYOND War and Chapter 136 of Veterans For Peace are co-sponsoring an hour-long webinar on Wednesday, August 23, 2023 at 7 p.m. AWWT artist Robert Shetterly will show images and tell stories about many of our most persuasive peace makers whom he has painted. Shetterly will also lead a discussion about why these truth tellers don’t get more traction, and what that means.
According to the sponsors, “Shetterly… is renowned for his series of portrait paintings titled Americans Who Tell The Truth, which depicts 265 activists (including WBW Board President Kathy Kelly and WBW Executive Director David Swanson) who are advocating for justice. Each portrait is a portal into American history, a story of courage and persistence that reminds us that the power of democracy lies in the determined actions of the people. Taken together, the portraits demonstrate how change requires a community; meanwhile, each individual portrait is a testament to the fact that through persistence, each of us has the power to make a difference.”
World BEYOND War is a “global movement to end all wars.” WBW’s peace pledge reflects its central mission: “I understand that wars and militarism make us less safe rather than protect us, that they kill, injure and traumatize adults, children and infants, severely damage the natural environment, erode civil liberties, and drain our economies, siphoning resources from life-affirming activities. I commit to engage in and support nonviolent efforts to end all war and preparations for war and to create a sustainable and just peace.”
Veterans for Peace is a national organization of military veterans serving the cause of world peace. They work with others both nationally and internationally. Its members pledge to use non-violent means and to maintain an organization that is both democratic and open with the understanding that all members are trusted to act in the best interests of the group for the larger purpose of world peace.
