DESCRIPTION:At 4 pm on Sunday, January 15 (EST), AWTT artist Robert Shetterly ( https://americanswhotellthetruth.org/about/about-the-artist/ ) will host a virtual Martin Luther King, Jr ( https://americanswhotellthetruth.org/portraits/martin-luther-king-jr/ )., Day event. Shetterly will share inspiring stories of a few of his portrait subjects, followed by a discussion of the holiday and how we honor King’s memory through community building and social action.\nThe featured paintings and stories will draw from Shetterly’s  2021 book, Portraits of Racial Justice. Publisher New Village Press describes the book as “a multimedia, interdisciplinary approach, blending art and history with today’s issues concerning social, environmental, and economic fairness. Shetterly’s paintings, as well as profiles of those portrayed, illuminate a community of people not only willing to recognize the shortcomings of America’s history, but most importantly, individuals who offer their visions of a better world moving forward.\n“Starting with Michelle Alexander ( https://americanswhotellthetruth.org/portraits/michelle-alexander-2/ ) and ending with Dave Zirin ( https://americanswhotellthetruth.org/portraits/dave-zirin ), the diverse array of fifty full-color portraits spans multiple generations and struggles. This volume also features four original opening essays on racial justice in the United States by Ai-jen Poo ( https://americanswhotellthetruth.org/portraits/ai-jen-poo/ ), Dave Zirin ( https://americanswhotellthetruth.org/portraits/dave-zirin/ ), Sherri Mitchell ( https://americanswhotellthetruth.org/portraits/sherri-mitchell// ), and Rev.
