Scott Nearing lived a full life of one-hundred years, and in public and private life was a conspicuous example of backbone, courage and personal integrity, publishing and speaking during much of the last century. I hope he will be added to the collection of portraits.

William Rivers Pitt?

Cindy Sheehan?

Cynthia McKinney?

Bill Moyers?

Are you joking? Hopefully this collection of propaganda never passes through the doors of a single school in this country.

I would like to see GLBT activists, like Leslie Feinberg or Matthew Shepard or his mother Judy.

I think you are amazing. I first learned of you while I was working on my Master's degree in Special Ed. I would love to see more people become aware of you and your work. I would love to see more politicians carry your values and beliefs. Your book, Savage Inequalities really contributed to how I carry myself as an educator in a low income area.

Editors comments   This message is meant for Jonathan Kozol, whose portrait I have painted.
I agree with everything that Megan says about him.

Great concept. Would also love to see more feminists included, particularly Gloria Steinem, Andrea Dworkin, and Catherine MacKinnon.

I love your work, and your message. Very pleased to see the likes of one, Amy Goodman!

I know you get these a lot, but what of Allen Ginsberg? Maybe Bob Dylan? Is there anywhere that I can purchase some of your prints?

I was shown this site by a professor of contemporary American literature.

Thanks!!!

Some of the individuals presented are indeed most admire (such as Abraham Lincoln, and Frederick Douglas). Yet some individuals, such as Howard Zinn, have been documented as to have repeated lie and distort for ideological purposes. Pete Seeger defended Stalin until only recently, and remains a defender of revolutionary Communism. I'm not sure how precisely Cindy Sheehan "tells the truth." Certainly she has a position that she upholds (which is absolutely her right), but she does not seem particularly skilled or well versed. Edward Said has been documented to have lied on multiple occasions on his coverage of the Middle East and very well may be an anti-semite. Rachel Corrie isn't famous for saying anything, merely for getting accidentally run over by a bulldozer.

Paul Robeson (who, of course, was very talented), as it is mentioned, did not repudiate Stalin even after he allied himself with the equally bloodthirsty Hitler. Is it right to defend the second greatest killer in history (after Mao, in front of Hitler) on the grounds that constitutional equal protections rights in your own country had not been satisfied? Would it have been right for a Jew in Russia to defend Hitler? What kind of logic is that? In fact, imagine if I, during the Civil War, declared that I refused to back the Union because of prejudice against the Irish? Wouldn't that seem a tad selfish? And this man is supposed truth teller? Did he even know of the horrible prejudice that blacks who actually spent time in the Soviet Union had to deal with (worse then even the American south, or even South Africa)?

Perhaps this is supposed to be some wider truth; the truth that advanced the wonders of socialism against the horrors of reactionary capitalism. Well then, I fully acknowledge my bias. I subjectively think socialist policies lead to both misery and poverty on a mass scale.

Oh, BTW, Mother Jones opposed women's suffrage.

Respectfully...

Editors comments   Dear Mr. Sakal,
I will try to be brief. I disagree with most of your assumptions and facts, or would interpret them differently.
For instance, as I recall, Mother Jones said something to the effect of, "You don't need the vote to can raise hell." She favored the empowerment of all people and encouraged them to assert it. Not to wait till they had the vote.
Any economic system that exploits people and nature leads to misery and poverty --- this is particularly true of predatory capitalism.
How could you possibly compare prejudice in the Soviet Union to what was suffered by Blacks in the US under slavery? Robeson said he was treated very well in the Soviet Union.
Remember it was the US State Dept. that took away his passport for telling the truth about racism in the US. The issue here is about our own belief in our own right to freedom of speech.
Your comments about Zinn, Seeger, Said, and Corrie are absurd. I woud encourage any reader to simply read their original documents. Rachel Corrie's compassionate letters home from Palestine before she was run over by the bulldozer are why she is remembered.
Sincerely,
Robert Shetterly

i just sent an email re: your "travelling exhibit" page is WAY outdated (only 68 total portraits; 2005). now i add the "curriculum" page: none of the "click here" links are alive, and who is the teacher who is describing his/her curriculum: NOW, i really DO have a comment: i see below your response re: thomas paine. i think you have chosen an artificial division of 'reality' vs 'art' in painting vs photography, and i urge you to add some truly great americans to your great collection. now, there's really a life's work for you.
