I thoroughly enjoy the site & recommend it to others. Can't wait for the exhibit to come to Houston, TX sometime. I would like to see a portrait of Judi Bari, environmental activist.

Editors comments   Judi Bari would be an excellent choice.
I wish I had time to do them all.

Well, bless my soul! I am delighted with your wonderful portrait of HARRIET TUBMAN, who has been my hero since I read about her when I was a child. Her bravery, resourcefulness, toughness, compassion, and determination are what every child should know about. Your portrait especially shows compassion in her expression--I LOVE it!
Thank you for this homage to Harriet Tubman, who is a person whom Americans should be proud of and whose example is one of the ones all people should strive to follow.

This collection is coming to Geneva IL. About this I am very sad. This is not about Americans who tell the truth. The real name of the exhibit is Liberals and Athiests who tell truth as they see it.

Amy Goodman (Why not Bill O'Reiley), Molly Ivans (why not Ann Coulter), Cindy Shehan (What?)

Yes there a few sound people in the mix. MLK. But the bulk of them are middle of the Road or liberal. There is not ONE conservative voice in the mix. That makes the exhibit a distortion and yes, propaganda.

I looked thru the book. Norm Chomsy was a laugh as was Nader and Kucinich.

What's saddest is the kind of people like William Sloane Coffin, an apostate unbeliever, and Rev Lewis. These are not Men of God. If they deserve being included, then Jesse Jackson should be. He at least has some belief in God.

It's sad that this was brought to our fair city. I guess anything will do....

This is a shame.

Love the site. NO bullshit, but the facts. For those who don't believe, don't say you weren't warned.

I wish you could add the full biography of the portraits on the website, so we can really put the quotes in context. Thanks

Editors comments   Dear Michaela, we're trying to keep up with the biographies. Most of the portraits have them. But we understand your concern.

What a great collection of work. I have enjoyed going through the collection. The great common denominator here is that by reflecting on the lives of some of these individuals, we are not glorifying leaders, but rather seeing some great examples of people who chose to make their own lives reflect their highest principles instead of looking to others. Thanks for sharing this. If I can say so, I think that two people truly deserve to be in this collection: Keith McHenry and Mumia Abu Jamal. McHenry has been arrested over 500 times and Abu Jamal is awaiting death in prison. Just a thought. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for the portraits you painted and for the website. We are grateful to you for allowing us to feature your paintings and the words you chose to represent these Americans in The Reader Magazine, which is sent to 300,000 people in California. It was remarkable to me to see the response of people to this Issue of our magazine. There is a unique power in bringing together and celebrating the words and ideas of Americans who speak with measured language, and speak the truth at a time when it is often avoided. It's clear to me what you have done also is something highly important-- you dear friend have made important the people of dissent, which is a powerful thing to do to bring about change when it is needed, as it is today. I myself studied fine arts and painting and art history before my work in founding The Reader Magazine. Thank you again for your choice to have made these excellent paintings. I have no doubt that your work is playing a significant role in history.

Editors comments   Thanks for your kind words, Christopher.
What I'm doing would not mean much if people like you did not publish the portraits. It takes all of us. And that's why the press is so important to the health of our democracy. Without dissent we would have none of our freedoms.

I stand arm in arm with these humble heroes. I would have chosen so many of these same bulwarks, and have met some current new ones to use as my inspiration. I'm so glad to see Molly Ivins, Jim Hightower and a local hero, Paul Wellstone in portrait along with so many esteemed others! Thank you for your wonderful contribution to a new society for PEACE. Of course the portraits are stunning, and in addition, your responses to the challenging voices prove you are deserving to be added to the list of those who tell the truth. I'm proud to be a member of this American group!
