Americans who tell the truth really tought me quite a bit about americans I didn't even know existed. It really opened my eyes and showed that one person really can make a difference, some way, some how. I look forward to future comeing cards and hope to expand my knowledge in some of Americas history.

This morning (June 18, 2009) I read your article published at CommonDreams.org titled "Courage, Commonsense, and the World Before Us:Some Thoughts for High School Seniors". It was truly magical and inspirational and I would highly recommend that it be given to every graduating college senior -printed on the backside of their diploma. For until people awaken to the fact that true life is not about money, career, gadgets and mass consumption we do not stand a chance. Your words and work are truly inspirational and you are to be commended as a real American Hero... perhaps a self-portrait is called for??? It is unfortunate that websites such as this are routinely breached by "trolls" whose only purpose seems to create strife and conflict. I suspect that if Jesus Christ himself had a website it too would be hacked by the Bill O"Reilley, Glenn Beck wannabe's. Anyway, Sir, I include you along with the other notables listed in your portraits.

Simply: Thank you. For lending your artistic vision, for including your lovely children's author and illustrator wife in your audience (Would she allow you to verbally acknowledge her presence and support in your talks? Seems fitting, but certainly it's up to her), for your humility, passion. Humor. I'm buying out h.c and p.b copies of your book from all of the local bookshops and am in the process of gifting them to preschools, art education centers and public FREE (Yaay!) Libraries. I hope someone can get one of your talks and slide presentations on You Tube, as well as on your site. Amazing that we have our first African American President thanks to the internet. Maybe with the electronic media we can turn around the effects of our mistaken hubris concerning our Mother and Father before said hubris comes around to gobble up more species.

Your work is noble and beautiful. Thank you for reminding us that there have been, and are, Americans Who Tell The Truth. I hope that you will not object to my posting your portrait of Paul Farmer and your website, on my blog, http://ellecoyote.blogspot.com/. If you prefer, I will remove the painting, but I wanted to publicize your work in my small way.

I enjoyed the portraits. I don't see Fr. John Dear in there though, perhaps soon? I was very impressed with his appearance on Democracy Now on April 20th. You might also include Fr. Frank Pavone, founder of Priests for Life. Everyone is 'against abortion' and Fr.Pavone tells us the truth about abortion, in full-color pictures. We have to be brave and face up to the fact that abortion is violence as well. Can you have the courage to be consistent? I assume you are commited to Truth, not to any political agenda. Fr. Pavone is an American Who Tells the Truth. Whether one thinks abortion should be legal or not, one should know what they are talking about or making a decision about. As this website honors Truth, I hope to see Fr. Pavone's portrait here soon.Thank you for reading this.

The portraits were wonderfully painted. I do, however, find it unfortunate, that you only included characters if their "truth" aligned with the typical liberal anti-war and utopian ideals. Seriously... Cindy Sheehan? A disgrace. I hope this doesn't become a mainstay in schools unless there is something authentic and genuine to balance it out.

Dear Matt, thanks for writing. I beg to differ with you on two accounts: 1. I have chosen people not aligned with liberal, utopian ideals, but with the ideals of this country. Cindy Sheehan's son Casey was killed in Iraq. Our government lied to him & all of us about the reasons for this war. This is a Constitutional issue that any conservative ought to be very concerned about. Our democracy was betrayed by these lies. As it was by Johnson's about Vietnam. 2. I can't imagine how anyone could think that Cindy Sheehan is a disgrace any more than Rosa Parks is. She demanded the truth. She didn't get it. The disgrace is not hers. It was Bush's. |

I want to first state my appreciation for the premise under which you’ve created this project. Many of the portraits contained within it provide a great source of enlightenment and courage that can serve as examples for Americans in future generations. I do, however, disagree with your depiction of the truth. What’s more, I can think of a few Americans who you’ve painted that would also disagree with you positions on certain issues. Most troubling, though, is that while you claim to advocate the truth, you do not provide the reasonable means of allowing dissent to your opinions to be contributed to your site. Regardless of your opinions, if you truly claimed to advocate the truth, you would welcome disagreement on your journal entries. You would make accessible a forum whereby people who disagreed with you could clearly state their argument against your “civil disobedience.” As it stands, those who do not adhere to your opinions are restricted to short “Viewer Comments,” thereby limiting their arguments to nothing more than rants. This site is not indicative of the “Democracy” you claim to endorse, because such democracy flourishes from disagreement and debate. My suggestion is to allow readers of your “Artist’s Journal” to post their own comments on your entries. Until then, your advocacy of Truth and Democracy is an “advocacy” in name only.

Dear Matthew, We used to allow comments, but it was abused so regularly, that we discontinued it. We've figured out a new way to do it. I hope you will go to the journals & write your comments. Best, Robert |
