Each of your subjects has demonstrated the power of action and by painting them and providing salient quotes and biographies, you are creating a truly inspirational collection of the best humanity has to offer. Thank you!

This is one of the most profoundly moving activist art endeavors I've ever tripped over on the internet or in life. Is there a full deck available to bring on the road overseas where there isn't technology to show this while teaching?

Editors comments   Dear Rabbi Milgram, We don't have all the images on cards, but we can provide images for you to print to use.
Thank you for your support & kind words.
Best,

I am much in sympathy with Dr. Ellsberg's views, but I am troubled that his biography has such glaring holes in it. There is no such thing in the Marine Corps (or Army) as a "rifle corps." Vietnam was not a war zone in 1952-55 when Dr. Ellsberg supposedly served there in command of a "rifle corps," although the implication seems to be that he served in combat. Other bio information has him at the Pentagon while in the Marine Corps. The bio is so muddled as to be non believable.

Editors comments   Dear Mr. Coughlin,
thanks for pointing out inaccuracies in the Ellsberg biography. They were not intentional. We will correct them.
Best,
Robert

I think all of this is just amazing I look up to most of the people in this book "Americans who tell the truth" But the one that stands out the most is Samantha Smith she was only 13 when she died yet she decided to do something with her life to make an impact on the way we think of the word war. I look up to her and every one who stood behind her.

Excellent, educational site. Another person to add is the late Toni Cade Bambara. A brilliant writer, she was light years ahead of many others with her vision for a better, more peaceful, world. Toni always told the truth, and was a modern day Ida B. Wells. Search her name on the internet to view her body of work.

Dear Rob: What beautiful portraits. I am especially delighted to see that you've honored Cecil Williams. Cecil tells the truth every single day, no matter how painful the process is for him or for the recipient(s). I'm wondering if you're familiar with Janice Mirikitani? She is the President of the Glide Foundation, a dancer, an author, a choreographer and so much more, in addition to being an inimitable teller of truths. She also happens to have Cecil as her husband. Thank you for sharing your talent.

Editors comments   Dear Mark,
Thanks for writing. Yes,I'm aware of Janice Mirikitani. I've painted her, too. Her portrait is right next to Cecil's.
Best,
Robert

I'm sure it must just be an oversight, but leaving Aldo Leopold out of this list is egregious. He is considered the father of the modern conservation movement and was a co-founder of the Wilderness Society. His collection of essays, "A Sand County Almanac" was published posthumously in 1949 and is the only book that continues to sell more copies each year than the year prior. It has been translated into numerous foreign languages and is used by soil and environmental conservationists and ecologists worldwide.

Editors comments   Dear Randy,
You are certainly right. I have every intention of adding Aldo Leopold. Although, I think Howard Zinn's People's History of the United States has also sold more copies every year since it was published.
Aldo Leopold ranks right up there with John Muir, Rachel Carson, Edward Abbey and Terry Tempest Williams in his effort to change in environmental consciouness in this country.

I find it interesting that your portraits' supposed tribute to our American Heritage does not include any of our founding fathers. I really hope the American peoples' taxes are not supporting your "non-partisan" agenda.

Editors comments   Dear Michelle,
There is a very simple reason that the portraits do not include founding fathers: I would have had to paint their portraits by copying other artists' portraits. I didn't want to do that. I began with the invention of photography --- so the earliest portraits are of people like Walt Whitman, Harriet Tubman, Abraham Lincoln, Sojourner Truth. I hope these figures are "non-patisan" enough for you. I receive no taxpayer money. Why would I expect taxpayers to pay for a project that tries to tell them truth?

Where is the rest of Van Jones' Biography? It would be nice to let the people see all he has truly done to help promote change.

Editors comments   I agree, we need to fill out the Van Jones Biography. We'll do that soon.

I'm in central high school,I read about Abraham Lincoln The thing I like reading about Abraham Lincom and I learned from him is that he disliked slavery and who fought that and also a fraction that told me to call the attention and I like ... "As I would not be a slave, so I would not be a master. This Expressed my idea of democracy. "
