This is a letter I wrote to Mr. Shetterly which I would like to share with you all. Dear Robert Shetterly, I don't know if you are planning to add more portraits to the Americans Who Tell The Truth collection, but if you are, please allow me to make a recommendation. Given that you began painting this series of portraits as a way to channel your anger and grief in the wake of the September 11th attacks, I would like to recommend a person who is attempting to tell the truth about what happened that day, Mr. Richard Gage. Gage is a member of the American Institute of Architects and founder of Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth (www.ae911truth.org). Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth is an organization which has a membership of over 200 architectural and engineering professionals who have questioned the truthfulness of the official 9/11 story and who are demanding of Congress a truly independent investigation into the 9/11 attacks. Richard Gage represents someone who is seeking the ultimate truth, a truth which is challenging the greatest lie of our generation but which has not yet reached mainstream consciousness. Mr. Shetterly, will you consider a portrait of Richard Gage? Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Paul DeGiere Aptos, CA

I liked all of the portraits, and I would like to learn more about them and the person that my project is basically about, but the one person that I would like to know more of is Ann Wright. I would like to thank

I am inspired to learn more about each of the people in these engaging portraits -- so glad that a few visionary individuals in my town brought the exhibit here, gathered sponsors, and brought Rob Shetterly to speak -- what a thoughtful, inspired, and accessible man. You could be the visionaries in your town! I hope this exhibit becomes available in all parts of this country we're inhabiting -- we need to think hard about our current impact on the world as an accidental superpower -- what's super about us is the great legacy of the people in these portraits -- my hope is we will use our power to act on their ideas.

In a previous post, Ty Wagner wrote: “Please don't think I am merely being antagonistic because of our obvious differences, but rather help me to understand your reasoning. I find the intended connotation of the title ‘great American’ quite dubious when applied to the majority of these people. Do you really think their words captured the epitome of patriotism for America like you insinuate, or perhaps mostly naive notions about humanity as a whole? 17 September 2007 - Dublin, Texas” I appreciate your request for help in understanding the reasoning behind this web site, Ty. Of course, I can’t speak for the person who originated this project. But I can speak for myself, and what I have to say is pretty simple, I guess. Here are some of the names featured on this site, grabbed pretty much at random, and in no particular order: Rachel Carson Ralph Ellison Susan B. Anthony Rosa Parks Abraham Lincoln Martin Luther King, Jr. Cesar Chavez Dorothea Lange Eleanor Roosevelt Frederick Douglass Jane Addams Mark Twain Wendell Berry Zora Neale Hurston William Sloane Coffin Sojourner Truth Dorothy Day John Muir Frances Moore Lappe Dwight Eisenhower Jonothan Kozol Jody Williams Margaret Chase Smith Helen Keller Daniel Ellsberg Paul Farmer Bill Moyers Fannie Lou Hamer Grace Lee Boggs Pete Seeger When I think of the vast, immeasurable good that these people have done and are doing in the world -- their service to humanity, their witness to what is good and true -- I say this: if they represent “mostly naive notions about humanity as a whole” we need a whole lot more naivete! And if these people do not represent patriotism at its best -- which I define NOT as “my country, right or wrong,” but as an effort to live into the best of the American dream, the highest of American values -- then patriotism itself is not a value. That’s my best take on the reasoning behind this web site, Ty. I hope you find it helpful.

The portraits are just wonderful-- it is so encouraging to look at these beautiful, strong faces and read their challenging and inspiring words. Thank you for your work. I don't know if this has been suggested to you yet, but I think that Ani DiFranco deserves a place among these folks in your portrait series.

We are in the throes of such criminal leadership, it helps some to remember there are truly great Americans, gone and present who we can feel connected to and gain strength from. We have to get over caring if someone sees us as nutty or strange because we know and because we care. Those who want to focus on the worst of humanity and see that as what has to be are, in my opinion, shortchanging America and themselves.

Nice work, touching. You should add Jane Goodall - she's done so much for both the environment and humanity, politics and just trying to better the world in general. I've never seen anyone so dedicated to a cause.

A thought comes to mind which I'm sure many of us have pondered... 'there is my truth, there is your truth; and then there is the truth' you have done wonderful works here that are made possible by the subjects own struggles with this above thought. Keep the Faith, charles
